Desarrollado por el director Tadashi Suzuki y su compañía, el Método Suzuki para el actor es una rigurosa disciplina física y vocal que mezcla movimientos tradicionales con movimientos innovadores. Mediante una serie de ejercicios específicos, el artista explora los principios básicos de energía, respiración, concentración y presencia. El Entrenamiento Suzuki reposiciona al cuerpo como la herramienta principal para la expresión teatral.

Viewpoints es una técnica de improvisación vocal y física que desarrolla e incrementa la conciencia de Tiempo y Espacio en el actor. Viewpoints ofrece un vocabulario físico específico que desarrolla la flexibilidad, agudiza el movimiento y cultiva un ensamble virtuoso. Desarrollado en principio por Mary Overlie y mas adelante por Ann Bogart y Tina Landau, Viewpoints explora la conexión que existe entre el teatro, el movimiento y la música.

The Adaptations LAB, dirigido por el artista de New York Donnie Mather, es un proyecto que consiste en varios talleres diseñados para que artistas de diferentes disciplinas se reúnan en un laboratorio de entrenamiento, colaboración e intercambios. Mather es Artista Asociado de la SITI Company de Anne Bogart y tiene aproximadamente 20 años de experiencia tanto en Suzuki como en Viewpoints. Ha impartido cursos en Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Alemania, México y Puerto Rico así como en los Estados Unidos. En el 2009 fue panelista en la Universidad de Río de Janeiro y ha sido Invitado Especial en el 2008 y 2010 en el Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá. DESCRIPTION:

These physical approaches to actor training seek to develop the performer's connection to the ensemble and to their own body as an instrument. We will work with the voice/body connection through rigorous but playful physical forms. If you are brand new to the VIEWPOINTS or the SUZUKI TRAINING the first 2 weekends offer an accelerated introduction to the basics. However, if you have previous experience but have been away from the training for a while, then this offers a great way to reconnect to the work. NOTE: Participants can choose either weekend or take both.

The final weekend June 18-19 offers an opportunity to train alongside an exciting array of theatre professionals with a variety of level of experience. This is a more accelerated workshop covering not only the basics but variations on advanced material as well. PLEASE NOTE: Previous experience is a prerequisite for this intensive. It is possible to participate in the first two weekends in order to fulfill that requirement and there is a significant discount for attending all 3 weekends.

DONNIE MATHER has over 20 years experience with Viewpoints and the Suzuki Training leading workshops throughout Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, & Turkey. He has studied and trained with Mary Overlie, Tina Landau, Anne Bogart, and SITI Company (Associate Artist 2000 - 2007). He's been a guest instructor at NYU, Columbia, Fordham, Marymount, The New School, Long Island University, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Bard College, The O'Neill Theatre Center, Hollins University, Hope College, Western Kentucky University, Louisiana State University, University of Houston, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and University of Puerto Rico. Currently, he is on faculty at the Atlantic Theatre School and the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Art.

VIEWPOINTS technique was first articulated by Choreographer Mary Overlie and later adapted for the stage by Director Anne Bogart and members of the SITI Company. The Viewpoints Training addresses issues of Time and Space through highly structured exercises and open improvisation. Performers expand their awareness through a unique physical vocabulary exploring the limits of theatre, movement, and music.

SUZUKI TRAINING was created by Japanese Director Tadashi Suzuki and his company. The training is a physical and vocal discipline that combines traditional and innovative forms. Through a series of rigorous exercises, the performer addresses energy, breath and concentration.

THE ADAPTATIONS LAB is an ongoing workshop series designed for performers of various disciplines to come together in a laboratory of training, collaboration, and exchange.

THE ADAPTATIONS PROJECT creates a theatrical body of work based on unusual source material by an ever-growing roster of Associate Artists. Foi inicialmente articulada pela coreógrafa Mary Overlie que segmentou o tempo e o espaço em seis categorias. Ela chamou sua abordagem The Six Viewpoints. Desde aquela época, a diretora artística Anne Bogart e a SITI Company têm expandido suas noções e adaptou-os para os atores.

O artista de teatro de Nova York Donnie Mather, em parceria com o Varal das Artes, está trazendo para o Rio de Janeiro um laboratório de treinamento em Viewpoints para artistas e interessados, com experiência em artes cênicas e/ou dança.

Donnie Mather tem quase 20 anos de experiência em treinamentos em Viewpoints e Método Suzuki. Trabalhou com Anne Bogart e com a SITI Company como artista associado por 7 anos. Directing Charles Mee's "bobrauschenbergamerica"

"Something old. 

Something new. 

Something Borrowed. 

Something Red, White, & Blue"

This variation on the old adage about weddings sprang to mind as we endeavored to (re)produce this unique contemporary play here at Hope College.  "bobrauschenbergamerica" is a broad comedy that takes its name from Robert Rauschenberg, the 20th century visual artist who specialized in collage work utilizing found objects and materials.  He famously created a hybrid of painting and sculpture which he called Combines. In "bobrauschenbergamerica", playwright Charles Mee sets out to write a play as if Rauschenberg were the playwright.  In so doing, Mee assembles disparate styles, original and existing texts, music, and dance to create his own theatrical collage.  The unconventional journey provides a roller coaster ride for the senses.  Rather than a direct biographical portrait, the resulting play reflects America and the American spirit which is as diverse and beautiful as collage itself.

Something Old:

The play draws from some very familiar forms including vaudeville, variety shows, and even sketch comedy.  Originally written for and in collaboration with SITI Company led by director Anne Bogart, the play premiered in the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville in 2001.   Their significant contributions in that original collaboration made a lasting impact on the very DNA of the piece.  Additionally, the play incorporates our own collective notions of America including our most nostalgic and idealized versions. On my own part, this has conjured many humble memories of my family  playing baseball in the front yard, playing checkers with my dad, tapping along to Square Dances, or watching Laugh In and Hee Haw on television.  Ultimately, the familiar stories of falling in and out of love, which are woven throughout the play, are probably the oldest element of all.  Everyone shares in this universal experience and Charles Mee gives us the opportunity to find and perhaps laugh at ourselves.  

Something New:

The most obvious new element is that of our exciting young ensemble here at Hope College.  These fresh-faced 21st century actors bring a youthful energy to this playworld.  Together as collaborators, we have have found our own interpretation and offered a new theatrical design supported by a new soundtrack.  These performers have their own way of dancing and ultimately, have brought their own humanity and sense of timing to the party. Furthermore, our 2013 production finds us in a very different context too.  We are now well into our second decade of this century and have just marked a new inauguration after a long and exhausting election year. Much has changed within our country in the dozen years since the play's original premiere.  That production was born during a troubled 2000 election and toured in the aftermath of 9/11.  While the play does not address these issues directly, the ever-complex question of what it is to be an American certainly lingers.  Under our current atmosphere, we have found that these questions resonate in entirely new ways with these new voices.  Indeed, it feels right presenting this exuberant show now at a college called Hope.

Something Borrowed:

In the play, Charles Mee borrows freely from existing texts, Walt Whitman’s poetry, real life characters, popular song and dance along with his own original storylines and situations.  The resulting collision of the old and the new, the familiar and the bizarre is inspired and borrowed from Rauschenberg's aesthetic.

Something Red, White, & Blue:

Here, I had to build upon the old adage because the play is not merely blue in tone.  It is not a drama, but a brightly colored comedy that at times is as bombastic as a 4th of July parade. The driving spirit within it is that of America itself as a vast entity, ever-evolving.  In the hands of Charles Mee's joyful comedy, this pluralism is something worth celebrating.

Donnie Mather has 15 years experience with The Viewpoints and the Suzuki Method training primarily with SITI Company as well as with Tina Landau and Mary Overlie. Since 1999, Donnie has been a frequent instructor at the Atlantic Theatre School, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, New York University, Columbia University, The New School, Hope College, University of Puerto Rico, Louisiana State University, Fordham University, and Bard College. Donnie has also taught abroad at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Florianopolis State University, University of Uberlandia, Cia dos Atores, Sao Paulo, Manizales Theatre Festival, and the Iberoamericano Theatre Festival in Bogota. As an actor, he is a former Associate Artist of SITI Company performing in SEVEN DEADLY SINS, LILITH, NICHOLAS & ALEXANDRA, and MACBETH. He has collaborated with director Kim Weild on FETES DE LA NUIT and UNCLE VANYA as well as the upcoming premiere of KADDISH (or The Key in the Window). He created & performed A SHOW OF FORCE with director Leon Ingulsrud (NY Fringe, Manizales Festival, Hope College, & Hudson Guild). He trained as well as performed with SITI Company (Anne Bogart, Artistic Director) where he was an Associate Artist for many years. Currently, Donnie is an instructor at the Atlantic Theatre Conservatory in New York.
